AAPI Heritage Month is in full swing in Cincinnati. Here's Your Guide to the Coolest Events Around Town:
AAPI Heritage Month is jam-packed with calendar of food, art, film, and fun that'll keep you busy all month long. Since launching in 2021, Cincinnati's AAPI Heritage Month celebration has exploded into one of our favorite cultural moments of the year.
Eat Your Heart Out
Missed Asian Food Fest? No worries, hit up Gabriela: Filipina Kantina for their special weekly menus all month long. Want to sample a bit of everything? Don't miss Findlay Market's AAPI Heritage Month Tasting Tour ($35 and worth every penny).
Movie Buffs, Listen Up
Grab your popcorn! The AAPI Film Series is screening some absolute gems—"Minari," "Joyland," and "Nurse Unseen." These aren't just films; they're windows into different AAPI experiences that'll make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
Bring Your Game Face
Who's up for Mahjong at Humble Monk Brewing Co.? Or join us for Board Game Night hosted by yours truly (Asianati)! These casual hangouts are perfect for meeting new friends while sipping on something tasty.
Why May Matters
Did you know AAPI Heritage Month happens in May for super specific reasons? It honors both the first Japanese immigrants arriving in America (May 7, 1843) and the completion of the transcontinental railroad (May 10, 1869)—where thousands of Chinese workers literally built America's infrastructure.
Here in Cincinnati, we have our own incredible AAPI history. Wong Yie—literally known as the "chop suey king"—opened the Gold Dragon restaurant way back in 1911! And Korean-American artist Bukang Kim has been creating stunning paintings that blend Eastern and Western styles right here in Cincinnati. And more recently the Cincinnati-based Japanese American sculptor, Tom Tsuchiya, has showcased his artistic talent with his statues of Reds legends at Great American Ball Park, along with his "Embrace No Evil" installation on Court Street!
